Black Cottonwood Struck By Lightning

This black cottonwood was struck by lightning. It was a healthy tree with very thick bark. The bark was very, very solid, and there was no rot in the bark.

The lightning just blew off the thick bark. Pieces of bark exploded out to a maximum of 100 feet from the lightning strike.

You can see in this picture pieces of bark far from the tree.

Some of the pieces were charred a bit - indicating that some were on fire for a time. They did not burn well since the bark was green.

Lightning is a very powerful force of nature, and should be respected.

It would be wise to take shelter when one of these storms approaches.
